The Real Cost
The Real Cost is a Drupal website that is owned and operated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which is an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HSS).
FDA’s award-winning public education campaign, “The Real Cost,” continues to prevent youth from starting and continuing to use tobacco products. The e-cigarette and cigarette prevention campaigns focus educating youth about the health consequences and risks of vaping and smoking. “The Real Cost” campaign was developed based on extensive research and uses a mix of marketing and advertising tactics across teen-relevant communication channels to reach youth audiences.

PWD contributed to the ongoing team-process of supporting this Drupal-based website. This included:
- Website development
- improving the back-end interface to accept new content
- fixing performance and formatting bugs
- ensuring a responsive design for mobile, tablet, or desktop
- adhering to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for universal access
- Writing the PHP code for custom module development
This is a sample page from The Real Cost website. It features an image slider, internal links, a drop-down “SOURCES” section and links to social media. All of these pages are thoroughly linked to analytics to understand how visitors are using the site; what is being clicked on and viewed.
