Philatax

This website was created and designed using Drupal, an open-source software, content management system.  I also designed the logo for use on Philatax as well as Pisces Web Design (PWD).

Philatax (pronounced: flat-tax) is meant to be a fun and educational website. I built it to connect two interests I have: philately (stamp collecting), and taxonomy (identifying animals, plants and fungi). It is by no means complete and exhaustive – countries are issuing new stamps all the time and new species are being discovered all the time. Nevertheless it is a fun way to see what species different countries commemorate (and what species they don’t). Of course there are many more species on this planet than stamps commemorating them. It is an impossible task to capture them all, but that gave me license to pick and choose whichever ones I like, and I’m continuously adding to it.

For example, Angola issued a large set of stamps in 1953 commemorating the local fauna. It has links to the issuing country as well as a philately link with information about the specific stamp.

Following different links can take you to a page showing which other countries have also commemorated a particular genus-species. In the picture below, Angola, Camaroon and Gambia have also issued stamps about the elephant (Laxodonta africana).

The use of databases gave this site it’s versatility with connections to the family, order, class, phylum and kingdom that it shares.
